You can become a driving instructor by meeting the minimum standard requirements of being at least 21 years old, having a high school diploma, pass a criminal record check and a valid drivers’ license first. There are other steps and some may vary by state, read on to find the basic information you will need in any state.
Your students will need more than on the road training they also need some lessons that they can only get in a class, so you too will need to take some educational classes. Many of the states will want you to take these courses in a center that is state approved. You will also need to show your driving skills on the road before you can become a driving instructor.
As you are teaching your student how to drive, you need to teach them the laws of the road in your state and basic rules that we all live by when we get on the road. You will have to teach them about what the lines on the road mean and how you follow them. Yes, your students will also learn these from a book, but knowing how to apply them while out on the road is extremely important, isn’t that the motivation you had when you decided you aspired to become a driving instructor.
You will need to pass a criminal record check in some states this will cost a fee. This is to stop anyone with possible crimes of their past playing a part in their role as a teacher. You will need to obtain this before you apply at any school where you would like to become a driving instructor.
After you have the above items, you will need to pass a state test before you receive your certification to become a driving instructor. It is wise to take these steps before you apply for any driving instructor jobs.

If you want to teach drivers’ education in high school or if you want to open your own business you will need to take courses in driving instructor college and either earn a certificate or your associates degree. You can become a driving instructor in a driving school, either only in a class environment, in the car, or both if you fulfill the above requirements.
