Is your Jeep Wrangler dashboard dying, or showing “no bus” on odometer?
Mine was too.
This is most likely due to an electrical short in the wiring in the dash itself or in the data cable running into the dashboard from the electronics or on board computer. Basically, at random intervals, the “airbag” warning will illuminate, followed by the following:
- The tachometer falls to 0
- The speedometer falls to 0
- Then, the “Check Engine” light will illuminate
- The odometer will show “no bus”
This, in sequence, means there was most likely an interruption or short in data retrieval. After the tachometer and speedometer go to 0, either the on board computer recognizes this and illuminates the engine light, or as soon as the interruption takes place (no bus message) the engine light comes on because its no longer receiving a signal from the computer.
In either case, its an annoying problem – you don’t know how fast you’re going!
Apparently, its not a problem with the computer or engine – the car will pass an inspection test with diagnostic equipment connected.
So, its an annoying problem with a possible expensive research and solution.
Here’s a workaround that’s free and works every time.
The next time the airbag light illuminates, watch the speedometer or tachometer. If it drops to 0, press the odometer button (the one that toggles between trip meter and total miles driven). This resets the connection (or something) and the on instruments will “reset” defeating the short circuit or loose connection. The airbag light will go off a few seconds after you do this as well.

Wow! Interesting – thanks for the tip. You just saved me a trip to the mechanic. I wonder though why it’s happening…
I am having the same problem ,the reset did not work ? is there a sequence that i need to do ? will a normal mechanic know how to fix this or is this a dealer fix ?
