Everyone has excess items around the house. This may be something such a Christmas Lights, that are used only once a year, items from one’s childhood, etc. Unfortunately, the average home is short on space as to where to put these things. They are too important to throw away or have a yard sale and when looking at other options one usually will find that overhead garage storage is an easy solution.

Overhead garage storage requires that there be some organization and plan in creating a functional and usable space in the garage. When items are put in a garage without a plan, they often wind up on the walls or floor of the garage. These items may even make it impossible to get a car in the garage.

Before deciding on a storage system, one will want to sort their storage items to remove any clutter or unnecessary articles. A storage area can fill very quickly with belongings that a person may not want to store, but don’t have a spot in the home for. Getting rid of clutter before installing the storage system will give a person an accurate idea of the size of the system that will be needed.

Some people choose to lay flooring on the beams of their garage to create overhead garage storage. This often is not an effective way to create a usable storage area. The system that one installs should be sturdy and able to withstand a sudden shifts of weight. In many cases, if plywood is laid on beams, it will shift and fall when a heavy box is moved on it.

There are many different types of overhead garage storage systems available that can accommodate any garage size. Some of the systems are made for light items that will be stored in a small area of the overhead garage. Other systems are made to provide overhead garage storage throughout the entire garage.

If the storage system that is being installed uses flooring one will want to insure that mice and other animals cannot enter the roof of the garage. When an attic is extended to provide for storage there is often an issue with animals making nests in the protected areas of the storage. Using a metal storage system alleviates this problem.

When preparing items for overhead garage storage it is important to pack the items properly in boxes and clearly mark the contents. This will help avoid having to go through box after box to find something that is needed. Good, sturdy boxes are now available at a reasonable price at most large home improvement stores. It is much better to spend a few dollars and have good containers than used boxes that are so covered with advertisement that you can’t read your printing.

Having neatly boxed and marked your storage the next thing is placing the boxes in the overhead garage storage space. The overhead garage system that is selected should be able to adequately hold the items that one wishes to store and have the capability to be expanded when needed. These systems are available through many Internet websites and local home improvement centers.
