Could your home office use a little spicing up? Do you have trouble working because the drabness sucks the energy out of you? You can conquer clutter and make decorative changes that will increase productivity and creativity.

If your office is boring and you just can not work there one more day this is for you. First make a list of what you would like to change. Chances are it will be a pretty long list. Too much clutter, not enough desk space, and drab colors are making your workspace a miserable place to be. You didn’t start your own business to be unhappy so it is time to fix the problem. Let’s clear out the clutter.

Start by sorting all the mail. Find some decorative storage containers and put all important mail such as bills and other necessary documents into separate labeled containers. Now deal with all that junk mail that is lying around. Just pitch it in the trash. Chances are you don’t really need any of it and if you do need something you can find it online yourself. Sort all papers in the same way: sort the important into files or containers and throw away the rest. When you get rid of the clutter, stack up the containers with labels facing out for easy access.

Make your desk as neat as possible. Clutter is a distraction and can prevent you from being productive. If you allow concert tickets and cosmetics to lie around on your desk, you might end up putting on or checking your makeup, and thinking about the concert you’ve been to and start planning your next one instead of doing something relevant. Avoid disruption as much as possible so you can work efficiently.

Next, add some extra surface area to work on and stash office supplies. You can make your own little table with storage underneath in a few easy steps. Purchase three wall brackets, three small filing cabinets, a piece of plywood, and enough felt to cover the plywood. Place the filing cabinets one and a half feet from the wall and about one foot apart. Mount wall brackets behind filing cabinets so that they are even with the top of the filing cabinets. Cover the ply wood with felt and lay on top of cabinets and brackets. Slide cabinets forward until there is no lip visible. You have just added some extra desk space, plus storage. The felt is going to help hold projects steady so they don’t slide around or get mixed up.

Of course, decorating won’t be complete without adding colors. If you can spare the time and effort, wall repainting is a good idea. More time and you can also consider wallpapering. However, if this is not possible, you can still inject colors here and there by accessorizing with area rugs, flowers, throw pillows and drapes. An intricately designed area rug as a centerpiece is at par with an expensive painting. It is a definite eye-catcher. A colorful area rug used as a wall hanging can instantly brighten up the room. If you’re vying for more shades, use colorful folders and containers and serious documents will have some fun.
