Eating healthy on a tight budget

Many people who want to eat healthier have the same complaint – eating healthy costs too darn much! You must have to be rich in order to eat healthy consistently. Health food is so expensive…

Well, I have good news for you. It doesn’t have to be that way!

It is fullypossible to be creative and make healthy meal choices and alternatives at home with just a little bit of time and effort. Thus you can provide your body with the excellent nutrition it needs that will make you feel better about yourself and your food choices.

First, it is very important to plan your healthy diet. When you go to the grocery store, take a list of the healthy food choices you will need to purchase instead of wandering up and down the aisles. Stores know that most people don’t bring lists with them anymore and rely on impulse buying. And for goodness sakes, never go to the store hungry!

Planing ahead also has the advantage of being able to check store fliers, ads, and even websites for specials, recipe ideas, and discounts. They also can give you a better idea of the foods you might think about purchasing. You don’t always have to buy all your health foods the same week, or at the same store! Buy whats on sale, and be picky about your selection at different stores. You might spend a little on gas, but keeping your search radius close to your home or first store can save money and time.

Try to buy healthy items in bulk. A lot of items can be found at club or membership stores like a Sams Club. If you don’t have a membership and don’t want to spring for one, check if one of your friends has a membership. If not, check your local food market. A lot of them have club packs that offer a discount for buying in bulk.

And speaking of “bulk”, check out the bulk food section of the local market. A lot of times there will be healthy foods offered in bulk. If possible, buy healthy foods that are freezer ready, or can be frozen for easier storage. Of course, make sure you have freezer room first…

Eat at home as much as possible and avoid eating out. If you work, lunchtime is a notorious culprit. Bringing a healthy alternative from home is cheaper and better for you than eating out at work, when you’re more succeptible to eating an unhealthy meal and paying more for it. Calculate the money you would spend doing this and spend it at the grocery store instead.

Finally, buy healthy foods that are in season. Fruits and vegetables all have a season where they are more readily available. Buying foods during these times will save money because they will be “normally” priced. Foods that are off season are more expensive. If you want, you can buy bulk fruits in season and learn how to freeze them at the peak of perfection – and enjoy them year round!

Great tips. Eating out will not only save you inches on your waistline, but also save you a ton of money in your account. Eating out is very expensive, no to mention terribly unhealthy if not careful!
