Where laptops are concerned, I have always heard one question asked by owners. They want to know how they can increase the life of their battery. Having a full day charge in your laptop is difficult, but here are a few tips to extend your batteries life.

Try not to let you laptop get hot. This is a main cause of battery failure. The fan inside your laptop is designed to keep the inside of the laptop cool. Do not sit your laptop on a soft surface like a pillow or a blanket, better to have a cooling pad for your lap.

Check your desk; make sure your workspace is dust free. Debris and dust can be a menace to your laptop if the fan pulls it in. This can cause your fan to overwork causing loss of battery power and other problems.

How many times have you stored you laptop in the car during a hot summer day? Heat in the car can result in depletion of the battery in your laptop. Having experienced this problem with my camera and cell phone, it just never occurred to me that the laptop would suffer the same fate.

One critical mistake we all have made at some point was to leave our laptop in the car. Not knowing that this would damage our battery we have contributed to the failure of our battery. Learn from this lesson and make sure that your laptop is not exposed to extreme heat.

Something I had not heard was to take out your battery when you are plugged into a wall outlet. If you are working on AC power, then it’s not necessary to have your battery in the laptop. Overcharging can also present problems for your laptop battery.

Keeping our power cords functional can be difficult resulting in you having to purchase a replacement. If you buy a new power cord, make sure you first find out what wattage your laptop requires. Purchasing a higher wattage than what is required can damage not only the battery but also the motherboard, which is really not what you want to do!

Removing your battery is not going to harm your laptop. Be sure to keep the contacts free of debris and dust by using a little rubbing alcohol on the contacts prior to putting the battery back and make sure they are dry. Simple enough and less drain on your battery.

Lastly, some batteries do require you to totally deplete the charge before you recharge. There are types of batteries have a memory and if you recharge before the battery is empty, you will only get a charge up to where the battery was empty. As with all new products, better to read your manual to see what’s the best way to care for your battery.
